Miss Addyson is the princess, diva, little momma in the house.  She has many hats and many personalities... I think that is why we call her "spicy".  She is the most loving and caring person I know... she is famous for her hugs....she takes care of both of her brothers and is often the one doting on Ethan.  She LOVES her daddy and loves to cook and shop with her mommy.  I find that she is SO amazing with one-on-one time/ interaction.  She has done extremely well adjusting to her new life in Saudi and her new school.... having to sleep alone in her own room however is NOT something she is taking a liking to.  I try to tell her that one day...soon... she'll appreciate that she has her own room!  She is a star in the kitchen and is always willing to help!  She has a few things that we love to hear her say... I can only remember this one but will add more as I think about them.- kamote (remote)

Addyson is the spicy glue that holds this family together!  Thank you for being YOU and not letting ANYONE talk you into being someone different (I can't believe I'm already saying this to my 4 year old!)

Happy Birthday Addyson!!!  We LOVE you!!!!

Rides at the Beach

We heard that there were camel rides at the beach every afternoon so we went to check it out!  If there was ever a time to ride a camel this would be the place!!!  The backdrop was amazing!!
We waited in line and watched a couple of other kids ride the camels... we quickly realized this one didn't enjoy the experience as much... or was just a bit more vocal about the experience!  As someone sat on her back she started to make noise and then stood up quickly.... even before the child was able to sit down on her back...
This intimidated our kids.....
so they opted for the horsey ride!
And enjoyed that relaxing ride much more!!!
As much as I was hoping for beautiful camel ride pictures with this background... there wouldn't have been the smiles on their faces as there were with the horse!
I tried to get Ethan to take a turn... he opted to play in the sand!
Owen was also given the chance to ride the camel... and I reminded him that he has ridden a camel before so he shouldn't be scared.... but that noisy camel was too much for him....
a peaceful horseback ride along the beach was perfect for this guy and his sister!!!  Beautiful!

Days Muscat

Our days in Muscat went something like this.... get up early.... oh wait, we are already up early... and send Brad plus a kid or two to go find good chairs by the kiddie pool and reserve them!!!  We learned this trick right away and made for great days by the pool!!!
Go eat an AMAZING breakfast outside!!!  If you have never been to a Shangri La resort you are missing out on one of the most amazing breakfast buffets I've ever been to!!!  We ate breakfast for at least an hour... so many wonderful thinks both to drink and to eat to choose from!!!
After a yummy breakfast we would head to the pool... we were always one of the first ones there!! While I love to sleep in and at times get frustrated that our kids get up SO early.... it helps during vacation... we really get the most out of our day since our day starts SO early!!!
If we needed down time while enjoying the water we took a trip on the lazy river!  This took at least 20 minutes to go around one time!!!  We started out going as a family and then Owen started to get brave and started going on his own and would make friends along the way!  Addyson also made a couple of friends but I made sure to keep her in my sight as she explored her independence!
We spent a lot of time at the kiddie pool!!!  I LOVED watching the kids play together!  Ethan is getting SO big and can be a part of play with the big kids!!!
We ate lunch by the pool!
Borrowed toys from others and played and played and played!
I even got in on the "fun"....
getting wrestled in the water until Owen was determined the winner!
And finally Ethan came to my rescue!!!  He is really starting to watch out for others and doesn't like it if he sees fighting going on.  Thanks for saving me, Ethan!
It wasn't as relaxing as the Turtle Beach resort... it is more busy here... but I'm glad we came and it is good to have both... makes for good variety and lots of memories!!!!

Mutrah Souq Shopping

One of the "must dos" in Muscat is to go shopping at the large Mutrah Souq shopping center.  We knew it would be crazy at night.... the people in the Middle East come out at night... during the day it is so quiet.... so we tried to go this morning but due to the Eid break it was closed... we totally forgot that part about traveling over Eid.  It is nice because Brad doesn't have to take much time off of work however.... all of the Middle East pretty much shuts down.... note to self... next year during Eid go to a non-Muslim country to enjoy the full advantages of the break! :)  The things you learn being an expat!
No worries, it was kind of fun going at night to be able to experience the FULL adventure.... it didn't take us long to start our shopping.  Brad quickly fell in love with the beautiful swords Oman has to offer!  The beauty of the camel bone handle and the sword made out of damascus steal sold him on this being the souvenir he wanted to take home! Now that I'm writing this post late I can fill you in on the drama with the sword... one of the most expensive souvenirs we've ever purchased.... we flew home through Bahrain who has strict policies due to the uprising they had a couple of years ago.... our bag was tagged coming out of the plane and was searched.  Our sword was found and confiscated.... despite begging and explaining that we weren't staying in Bahrain only driving through the sword was still taken and we were told we could pick it up at the boarder in 7 days.... yeah right, I thought!  I figured we'd never see that sword again!  But thankfully, I was wrong!  2 weeks later we took a nice day trip to Bahrain, did some shopping.... and got the sword... the infamous Omainen sword!
Back to shopping.... there was NO shortage of things to see and buy.... hot items were silver, camel bones, treasure boxes, lights, and
the traditional hats that the guys wear!  Doesn't he look adorable?!?  I really wanted him to get one but he wasn't a fan... so I'll just have to enjoy the picture!
So much to see and buy also meant for SO much for the kids to touch, get into, and break.... and managing the kids in this busy crowd while being eyed (I didn't wear my abaya.... here I don't have to... however the Muslim women cover up so I was a bit of a "sight to see") made the evening a bit stressful.... not as relaxing as I hoped shopping would be... but seriously... when is shopping ever relaxing with 3 kids... without the added stress of new country, language barrier, being a minority.... and the list goes on.
I'm happy to report that we made it out alive.... with a few more grey hairs..... a few more souvenirs than we had anticipated... but we made it out relatively happy and glad we ventured out!
We made our way to the other end of the shopping center which turns out to be the main entrance and along a very bustling street with other shops and places to eat so we took our picture in front of the sign and made a beeline to find a seat to try to chill out for a bit.... as easy going as I am... at times the crowd and being stared at gets to be a bit much for me.... topped with kids asking for everything in sight.....but it is also the feeling that everything is dirty and watching out for my kids and everyone that wants to touch them because they look different... it is all so overwhelming!
man, I need a schwarma! : )  Really, an adult beverage would have been nice but not the opportunity here.... you can drink in Oman but I think only at resorts and not during Eid.... so we settled for a schwarma!
A quick sit down place outside that still let us enjoy our surroundings (from a distance), the beautiful weather, and people watching the folks of Oman!
Whatever your needs- you can find them at the Mutrah Souq!

First day in Muscat

The beauty that surrounds our hotel is amazing!
Mountains and ocean make for peaceful surroundings that take your breath away.
And to have a hotel room in the middle of it all was amazing!  I knew right away this was going to be a completely different experience from the Turtle Beach Resort we just left!
It didn't take us long after checking into our room to go exploring and find the multiple pools to enjoy!
And it was nice to shower up after a long day of traveling fun and get dressed up to enjoy some drinks outside!
We also had about 10 restaurants to choose from to find a yummy dinner to enjoy... this was a huge change from the Turtle Beach where breakfast and dinner were served in the same spot at the same time every day!  We almost had too many choices.... I sort of liked not having to think about what was for dinner!
We settled on dinner at the Asian restaurant!!  We were one of the first to arrive... look at how empty the restaurant is.... after having our lunch taken over by the yellow jackets at Wadi Shab we were starving!!!
I was a little worried how we would all do adjusting back to "civilization" and eating in a nice restaurant after such a relaxing time but we did pretty good.... although there is never a dull moment with us..... no matter where we are! :)
Sushi for dinner!
We ALL enjoyed it!!!
One WHOLE piece at a time!!!
This has been an amazing vacation so far and I am looking forward to all that Muscat and the Shangri La has to offer!  I know the kids are having just as much if not more than I am!!!  I still cannot believe this journey we are on!!!
To top of our first night in Muscat, we did a bit of shopping at the hotel souq and found ice cream for dessert!!!!  What a great first day in Muscat!!!
