After touring Ephesus, we headed up the mountain to Mary's House. Half way up the mountain was a large statue of the Virgin Mary! Beautiful!
Mary's house is located
on the top of the "Bulbul" mountain
9 km ahead of Ephesus, and it is
hidden amongst all of the greenery (Turkey is a very lush place!!). It is a tiny house in the "middle of nowhere" that I kept asking myself, how did Mary every find this place??? It is thought to be the place where
Mary may have spent her last days. Indeed,
she may have come in the area together
with Saint John, who spent several years
in the area to spread Christianity.
No pictures are allowed inside her house which is now set up as a shrine and has lots of significant religious items such as one of the Pope's rosarys. We snapped this quick picture of the inside as we stepped in and the security guard heard our camera and came over to see what we were doing!
Outside Mary's house. The area to the left is where they hold Mass! This would be an amazing place to attend a service not only is it very holy but it is also very beautiful and peaceful fully surrounded by trees!
It was a very spiritual moment to be here and I'm so glad our kids got to experience this with us!
The pathway below where Mary's house is has an area set up to light a candle and say a prayer. We all got to light a candle!
We prayed especially for our Grandma Blessing who is nearing her time to go and be with the Lord.
Enjoying the scenery
A perfect resting spot!
As you are leaving there is a wall COVERED with notes/ prayers to Mary. Things from notebook paper to napkins to leaves. All tied up and intertwined. What a sight to see.
Where should we hang ours???
The visit to Mary's house is simple, not a lot of fanfare, but leaves a lasting impression. Beautiful!
